2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival

The star of this year's Festival will definitely be the grass. On Friday, it was all about how fantastic is was. By Sunday it was, "Where did it all go?"

  • Grass! There's beautiful grass everywhere!
  • Everybody was on the grass at some time or another.
  • Sarah Watson and her mandolin player.
  • Peace, out.
  • Um, inside-joke. Move on to the next image.
  • The Walkmen and their awesome triangle solo.
  • dream-like, fantasy weather.

  • Thievery Corporation is one of my favorite artists to appear at the music festival through the years. For one thing, their music is irresistibly rhythmic and exotic, and visually there's always something spectacular to photograph. So, enjoy with me, the dancer's new blue wings...
  • No, that's not my finger in the corner -- it's one of hundreds of arms that I have to shoot through to get shots of the stage from out in the crowd. I usually discard the failures instantly, but this frame caught the dancer's wings completely unfurled, so deal with the fleshy corner already.
  • See what I mean??? If I wasn't as tall as I am, and as careful to avoid obstacles with my lens, you wouldn't get any of those close-up shots of the performers on stage. That's some of Thievery Corporation's members performing. They switch vocalists and other performers for each song.
  • Andrew Bird, with the fiddle on the Dell Stage, was fantastic.
  • Alberta Cross lead vocalist and co-founder, Petter Ericson Stakee
  • Alberta Cross's cofounder and bassist, Terry Wolfers. My group of friends met him and the rest of the band in the autograph tent after their performance. Great bunch of guys.
  • Nic Offer and his band, !!! (chk chk chk, or bang bang bang, or any sound repeated 3 times), got the crowd dancing.
  • Say bye-bye to the grass.
  • What a difference a day makes. It rained for five or six hours on Saturday. The fabulous grass couldn't stand up to the rain and 70,000 pairs of feet. By the time Dave Matthews Band was done, the turf had turned to mud the consistency of cake frosting.
